University Tuition Benefit FAQ

  • The benefit reduces based on the actual number of hours that the employee, spouse, or dependent are registered to take. There is no penalty from the Tuition Benefit Office for dropping after the add/drop deadline.

  • There is a 152 credit hour limit for dependents receiving the ½ tuition benefit. The system stops automatically posting the benefit at 130 credit hours. Please contact the Tuition Benefit Specialist at tuition_benefit@byu.edu.

  • The tuition benefit for Independent Study is only available to employees. Spouses and dependents may not use the Tuition benefit to pay for IS courses. Spouse & children may use the benefit to pay for SLC campus courses and evening courses.

  • Each semester you are required to complete an Employee Request for class attendance form before receiving the tuition benefit. Please email the Tuition Benefit Specialist a tuition_benefit@byu.edu.

  • Each semester your spouse, who is the employee, may be required to complete an Tuition Taxation form before receiving the tuition benefit. Please email the Tuition Benefit Specialist a tuition_benefit@byu.edu.

  • Please contact the Visiting Students Office (801) 422- 0798 for employees, spouses and dependents looking to take classes but who are not seeking a degree. Please contact Enrollment Services (801) 422-4104 for undergraduate degree seeking and Graduate Studies (801) 422-4091 for graduate degree seeking.

  • The tuition benefit will pay for any tuition charges used for the credit hours associated with the program. The tuition benefit will NOT pay for programs fees, travel, books, food, or housing.

  • The tuition benefit will pay for any tuition charges associated with college credited classes. If it is an Independent Study course, only the employee is eligible for the tuition benefit.

  • The University has put limits to the amount of credit hours an employee can take regardless of accepting the tuition benefit. Those limits are as follows:

    • Full-time Employees
      • six (6) credits per semester (Fall and Winter)
      • six (6) credits for Spring and Summer combined, with no more than four (4) in any single term
    • 3/4 time employees and Adjunct Faculty
      • Undergraduate
        • 11.5 credits per semester (Fall and Winter)
        • 11.5 credits for spring and summer combined
      • Graduate
        • 8.5 credits per semester (Fall and Winter)
        • 8.5 credits for spring and summer combined
