Supplemental Life Insurance (SGTL)

Additional life insurance protection is available at group rates for employees, their spouse, and dependent children in the form of Supplemental Group Term Life insurance (SGTL). This benefit is in effect regardless of the cause of death, i.e. illness or accident. Rates are based on each covered individual's age. The different coverage options are outlined below:

Employees: An employee can purchase coverage up to six (6) times their salary. The salary is rounded up to the nearest $10,000, then used as the salary multiple. The maximum amount of coverage an employee can apply for is $1 million. (After April 1st, 2024 the maximum benefit for employees will increase to $1.5 million. If your current benefit amount is restricted by the previous limit your coverage will increase automatically after April 1st, 2024.)

Spouse: An employee can purchase up to $200,000 coverage on their spouse in $20,000 increments. (After April 1st, 2024 the maximum benefit for spouses will increase to 260,000. If you are wanting to increase this amount, your spouse will need to meet new health standards.)

Children: An employee can purchase one of three options of coverage for dependent children up to age 26. Each coverage option covers each child with the selected amount and has a flat monthly premium rate no matter how many children are covered:

  • $3,000 - $.44/month
  • $7,500 - $.96/month
  • $15,000 - $1.74/month

After April 1st, 2024 the benefit will automatically increase as follows:

  • $5,000
  • $10,000
  • $15,000

From birth to six months, a child is covered at $1,000 for all options. Once a child has reached six months of age, the employee may apply for a higher level of coverage.

Important Notes

You can change or apply for supplemental life insurance (SGTL) at any time. It is not constrained to the open enrollment period. At the time of enrollment (or increases in coverage) you will need to complete a health questionnaire for each individual. Furthermore, DMBA might contact you to schedule a nurse's visit in your home or office to obtain more health information and samples. Coverage does not go into effect until DMBA approves the application, which can take up to two months.

If a new employee applies for SGTL within 30 days of his/her hire date, there will be $3,000 of guaranteed coverage for the spouse and children even if they would not normally qualify for life insurance.

After April 1st, 2024 the Dependent Guaranteed-issue coverage will increase to $10,000 for spouse and $5,000 for dependent children 6 months and older. If a dependent is already enrolled in a guaranteed-issue amount, their benefit will increase automatically.

Changes in premium rates take effect every April 1st. For example, if your birthday is in June, you won't be charged your new premium rate until the following April.
