Reporting Employment Discrimination
The equal opportunity office is committed to addressing all reports of employment discrimination promptly and thoroughly. Understanding the following key concepts will help you determine if you may have experienced workplace discrimination:
What Constitutes Employment Discrimination?
Employment discrimination occurs when an individual faces adverse employment action based on legally protected characteristics. These protected characteristics include:
- Race
- Color
- National Origin
- Religion
- Sex
- Genetic Information
- Age
- Disability
- Veteran Status
Note: BYU holds a religious exemption that permits requiring employees to abide by the standards of our sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints must hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend.
What is an Adverse Employment Action?
An adverse employment action is any employer decision that negatively impacts your job or working conditions, such as:
- Termination
- Demotion
- Pay reduction
- Unfavorable job assignments
- Threats
- Unfair performance evaluations
Protection from Retaliation
BYU's Non-Discrimination and Equal Opportunity Policy includes strong protection against retaliation. You can feel secure in reporting discriminatory acts, knowing that any form of retaliation is strictly prohibited.
How to Report Employment Discrimination
You have several options for reporting workplace discrimination:

- File an anonymous report through BYU's Compliance Office
We encourage anyone who has experienced unlawful discrimination to come forward. All reports will be handled with professionalism. Although we may not have the ability to hide the identity of reporters, information shared will be a need to know basis only.
