Purpose: Track steps during one month and get the department moving!
Duration: 3 weeks
Details: Broadcasting did an Olympic themed walking challenge! They borrowed pedometers from BYU Wellness and distributed them out to those who wanted to participate. Those who signed up were put into groups from different departments withing Broadcasting so they could get to know each other better. There were at least 4 per group and each group was assigned a different country! Each person then received a picture of their flag to put in their work space so everyone knew who they were representing.
The task was simple, the country with the highest steps won the gold medal! The advocates (with some help from their coworkers) sent out a weekly tracker for all of the participants to update their weekly steps. The tracker was reported on google sheets for everyone to see. They did allow conversions within reason, like swimming, biking, and running. To make things more interesting, only weekday steps counted! Team walking breaks were encouraged.
A medal ceremony happened at the end of the 3 weeks. They gathered all of the teams and announced the winners (about 10 minutes long). You don't have to have prizes, but this is what Broadcasting did to make it interesting: 1st place team was given cougar cash, 2nd place workout towels, 3rd place a box of granola bars. To make it more fun, they played the Olympic song and the national anthem for the countries that won! They also gave out little medals.
*They did a previous walking challenge during December and called it the Holiday Hustle. Participants were put in reindeer groups.
Outcomes: Encourage department unity by walking together with some friendly competition!
