Staff Hiring FAQs

  • Staff positions are posted for a minimum of five days; however, an occasional exception may apply. For example, internal postings can be posted for three days.

    All jobs close at 11:59:59 p.m. on the close date listed in each Y Jobs posting.

    When a job is posted as "open until filled," the posting can close anytime after the five-day minimum posting requirement has been met.

  • All applications considered for a position must meet the minimum requirements as written in each job posting.

    Example: If the job requires a minimum of two years work experience, this means full-time work, not part-time work. Volunteer work is not counted. All work experience must be listed in the Work Experience section of the application to be counted, even when a resume is included.

    Example: If the job requires a specific bachelor’s degree, the applicant must have that specific degree, i.e., “bachelor’s degree in accounting.” If the job requires a “bachelor’s degree,” then any bachelor’s degree is acceptable.

    Example: If the job requires a bachelor’s degree plus work experience or equivalent education and experience, the combined education and/or work experience will count toward the required experience.

  • Yes. Each final candidate will be asked to complete a background check prior to an offer of employment. A background check obtained by the university includes, at a minimum, a social security number validation and verification, a state and national criminal records search, and a national sex offender registry search (see BYU Background Check Policy).

  • BYU staff voluntarily commit to conduct their lives in accordance with the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ and strive to maintain the highest standards in their personal conduct regarding honor, integrity, morality, and consideration of others. By accepting employment, each member of the BYU community personally commits to observe the CES Honor Code standards approved by the Board of Trustees “at all times and in all things, and in all places” (Mosiah 18:9).

  • Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who accept an offer of university employment for a nonstudent position on or after January 27, 2022, also accept as a condition of employment that they will hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend. The university regularly contacts ecclesiastical leaders concerning the temple eligibility of all employees who are members of the Church.

    As a condition of employment, all employees must act in accordance with university policies and the Church Educational System (CES) Honor Code, including the Dress and Grooming Standards, and refrain from behavior or expression that seriously and adversely affects the university mission or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Employees are expected to be role models of a life that combines the quest for intellectual rigor with spiritual values and personal integrity, and to conduct their work in a professional manner consistent with the values espoused by the university and the Church.

  • Yes, while BYU to prefers to hire members of the Church who hold and are worthy to hold a temple recommend, those who are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can apply for positions at BYU.

    1. Fill out the application completely before the close date. If the job is posted as “open until filled,” submit the application as soon as possible.
    2. Human Resource Services will screen all applications based on minimum requirements for the job and then forward all applications meeting the minimum requirements on to the hiring department.
    3. The hiring department reviews the applications to determine which applicants to interview.
    4. Applicants may be asked to complete an online digital screening with HireVue.
    5. Applicants may be asked to come in for a face-to-face interview, or a “live” online interview if applicant lives out of state.
    6. Depending on the job, there may also be a skills test as part of the hiring process.
    7. Final candidates will be asked to undergo both an ecclesiastic clearance and a background check prior to an offer of employment.
  • Once you have completed an application, it will be temporarily stored in our applicant tracking system. BYU is unable to keep all applications indefinitely. We highly recommend applicants store their own documents, both electronic and/or hard copies.

  • HireVue is an on-demand digital screening tool that BYU utilizes to help applicants and selection committees connect in a more efficient and convenient manner. Each applicant selected to participate in a HireVue screening will receive an email invitation, asking them to answer a few questions at their convenience. Their answers will be recorded for the selection committee to review. Following a HireVue screening, if an applicant is selected to move forward in the process, they will be contacted to participate in a live interview via either Zoom or in-person.

  • Exempt staff are paid on the last banking day of every month. Non-exempt staff are paid biweekly, every other Friday.
