Activity Overview
Pickleball is a fun game that is becoming massively popular in the United States. It’s a sport similar to tennis that combines skill, fun, and fitness. You can now combine a pickleball paddle with 4-square rules and play with a rotating group!

Activity Instructions

  • Number the quadrants 1-4 in clockwise order.
  • Play begins when the person in square 1 serves the ball into the opposite quadrant (quadrant 3).
  • The ball can only bounce once in any square. There is no kitchen in any of the quadrants like in traditional pickleball.
  • When the ball enters a player's quadrant, they must hit the ball with their paddle into an opposing player’s quadrant before it bounces twice.
  • If the ball lands out of bounds, fully across the boundary line, before it bounces, the player who hit the ball is out and needs to return to the waiting line for another try. If a player hits the ball and it bounces again in her/his square, s/he also needs to return to the waiting line. There is no penalty for a ball that hits the net but still goes over into another player's quadrant.
  • If the ball bounces more than one time before it is hit into another square, the player who let the ball bounce needs to return to the waiting line for another try.
  • Any time a player moves out of the game into the waiting line, a square is left open. The people in lower numbers move up to fill the gap and the next person in the waiting queue enters square 4 to play.

You can play for a set amount of time or until one person has been in quadrant 1 for a set number of consecutive or total rounds.
